Tests of the installations on the cross-border sections were carried out in the first half of 2016 and received positive feedback. The use of full functionalities of the radio in-fill units has shown advantages in using existing GSM-R installations, increasing performances and safety during the approach phase of red signals.
Until the end of 2022 Milan–Genoa
According to European provisions, the new line Passo dei Giovi expected in 2021 will be equipped with ETCS.

The conventional line section Tortona-Genoa via Mignanego will be equipped with ETCS as well in order to satisfy the expected traffic demand.
