Rockslide in Switzerland: 2000 cubic metres of rock succesfully blasted

At 12:30 on 18 June 2012, SBB blasted approximately 2000 cubic metres of rock above the closed Gotthard rail line using 300 kilo of explosives in about 25 blast holes. Following preliminary assessments by air from a helicopter, experts expressed their satisfaction with the blasting works. The actual clear-up and repair works can be started after anoterh closer inspection of the slope. Subsequently, the repair and maintenance work on the railroad, overhead traction lines and the retaining wall can start.

SBB is doing its best to enable operations on the Gotthard axis as fast as possible. It is extimated that both lines of this important transit route will be ready for operation on 2 July 2012.
