Opening of Monte Olimpino II

On 14 April 2010, the railway tunnel Monte Olimpino II could be put in full operation again, after roughly ten months of re-construction. The modernisation of the tunnel became necessary because of several water inleakages. Most of the time the tunnel was re-constructed in parallel to daily train operations. In the two track tunnel one of the tracks was blocked for the construction works whereas the other track was in use for train operations. Only during the last phase of the construction works the entire tunnel had to be blocked to enable the swift completion of the works. From now on, trains can pass through the tunnel without any interferences. Trains which had to be deviated during the recent weeks can now take the shorter and more efficient way through the tunnel Monte Olimpino II. In 2008, more than 18,000 freight trains passed through the tunnel.
