Germany and Switzerland ease admission process of railway vehicles

In future, Germany and Switzerland approve of each others' admission process of locos, multiple units and passenger carriages. On 22 September, a corresponding contract was signed by the executive managers of their regulatory bodies in Lugano. It substantiates a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) from 2007 between the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Austria concerning the cross acceptance of vehicles.

Based on this MoU, the German Eisenbahn-Bundesamt (EBA) and the Swiss Bundesamt für Verkehr (BAV) have agreed on frame conditions for the approval of railway vehicles which include a common list of technical requirements.

In this way, double testing will be avoided and time as well as costs reduced. Still, the access to the Swiss infrastructure is bound to an authentication issued by the infrastructure manager of the concerned line. In Germany, Swiss vehicles must fulfil the conditions of DB Netz as infrastructure manager.

In either country, 50 to 100 vehicles each year are in need of an authorisation for the railway net of its neighbouring country. In the past this admission process took 12 months.
